Herakleia - Kapikiri

The village "Kapikiri" is a particularly suitable location for excursions, hiking or a 'cultural vacation' in the Bafa Lake region. It is settled directly on the lake at the foot of the Latmos mountains, at the end of a small road which branches off from the highway between Milas and Soeke in the town of Bafa.

Herakleia - Kapikiri

The village is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Herakleia. All stones used for the building of houses, ways and property demarcations have come from the surrounding ruins, therefore the entire village now stands under  protection as an historical monument. One lives here in an open-air museum with exhibits from stone age to modern times. In the center of the village you will find the temple, the agora, the old city wall and more.

Historic places
In the Bafa Lake region are the most well-known historic places of western Turkey:
Ephesus , Milet , Priene , Dydima ........ That's the reason why this is the ideal area for study and culture trips. From Bafa Lake many historic sites are accessible on day trips.

The Latmos Mountains
These mountains rise up to1400 m high at the east and north end of Bafa Lake. Because of its jagged silhouette they are called in Turkish 'Besparmak' (five fingers).

This striking silhouette could perhaps be the reason why weather, mountain and moon gods met here.

The Latmos Mountains are an outstanding area for easy hiking or more ambitious mountain climbing and trekking tours. Walking on old goat paths, one hikes from one place of interest to the next.

Without a professional guide, however, one will most likely miss the most interesting places. Although this mountain area is not large, one can easily lose his sense of orientation between the bizarre rock formations of gneis and mica slates. What first seems to be a path can quickly disappear between the wild rocks of the Latmos.
